About This Band
Ashes of Ares is an American metal band formed in 2012 by former Iced Earth vocalist Matt Barlow and former Nevermore drummer Van Williams. The lineup was completed by Freddie Vidales, a former Iced Earth bassist, solidifying the group’s strong ties to the power and progressive metal scenes. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2013, showcasing a blend of classic heavy metal riffs, powerful vocals, and epic songwriting. The band’s sound draws from traditional and progressive metal influences, with Barlow’s commanding voice as a defining feature.
After a five-year hiatus, Ashes of Ares returned with Well of Souls in 2018, introducing new guitarist Gustav Hector and bassist Joey Vera (of Armored Saint and Fates Warning). The sophomore album expanded their sound with darker, more complex compositions while retaining their melodic intensity. Though activity has been sporadic
