DEATH METAL: The Evolution of Metal’s Most Extreme Sound

The definitive guide to the genre that redefined heavy music

Death Metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal characterized by its sonic aggression, technical complexity, and dark themes. Emerging in the mid-1980s as a natural evolution of thrash metal, it took musical intensity to unprecedented levels with its distinctive guttural vocals (called growls), down-tuned distorted guitar riffs, extremely fast drumming with prominent blast beats, and complex musical structures that often defy conventional songwriting.

Origins and History

The genesis of Death Metal began in the United States, with three fundamental scenes: Florida became the epicenter with pioneering bands like Death (whose 1987 album “Scream Bloody Gore” is considered foundational), Morbid Angel with their landmark album “Altars of Madness,” Cannibal Corpse with their graphic lyrical imagery, and Obituary. Simultaneously, New York’s Suffocation revolutionized the genre by adding layers of brutal technicality and breakdowns, while Sweden developed its distinctive sound characterized by the “Entombed Guitar Tone” (or Sunlight Studio sound) pioneered by bands like Entombed and Dismember.

Musical Characteristics

Death Metal is defined by its extreme musical traits: heavily distorted down-tuned guitars, complex song structures, rapid tempo changes, precise double-kick drumming, blast beats, and growled vocals. Lyrics often explore dark subjects including death, violence, mythology, and anti-religious themes.

Subgenre Evolution

Throughout the 1990s, Death Metal diversified into numerous substyles including Technical Death Metal (Nile, Cryptopsy), Melodic Death Metal (At The Gates, In Flames), Brutal Death Metal, and Death-Doom. Each subgenre emphasizes different aspects of the core sound, from technical proficiency to melodic sensibility.

Influential Bands and Albums

  • Death – “Scream Bloody Gore” (1987) and “Symbolic” (1995)
  • Morbid Angel – “Altars of Madness” (1989)
  • Cannibal Corpse – “Butchered at Birth” (1991)
  • Entombed – “Left Hand Path” (1990)
  • Suffocation – “Effigy of the Forgotten” (1991)
  • Obituary – “Slowly We Rot” (1989)
  • Deicide – “Deicide” (1990)
  • Nile – “Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka” (1998)

Legacy and Modern Scene

The legacy of Death Metal is immense, with its influence extending beyond the genre into metalcore and deathcore. Modern bands like Archspire, who push technical speed to its limits, and Bloodbath, who pay homage to the classic Swedish sound, demonstrate that the genre remains vital, continuously evolving while maintaining its raw, challenging essence. Death Metal continues to be the choice for extreme metal purists who seek musical complexity, sonic power, and total immersion into the dark and technical.
