About This Band
Colosseum was a Finnish funeral doom metal band formed in Riihimäki in 2006 by guitarist and vocalist Juhani Palomäki, who was also the mastermind behind the gothic metal band Yearning. Palomäki conceived Colosseum as an outlet for his frustration with the constraints of his primary project, seeking to create music of extreme slowness, weight, and darkness that blended funeral doom with rich classical orchestrations and dark ambient soundscapes. The lineup was completed by guitarist Olli Haaranen, bassist Janne Rämö, and drummer Sameli Köykkä. Their sound, characterized by monolithic, slow-tempo riffs, deep growling vocals, and atmospheric layers of strings and synthesizers, drew immediate attention from the underground metal scene, leading to a contract with Firedoom Music (a subsidiary of Firebox Records). Their debut album, Chapter 1: Delirium (2007), established their signature aesthetic of bleak, cinematic despair, blending influences from classical composers, ambient artists like Lustmord, and the lyrical darkness of Sumerian and Lovecraftian mythology.
Colosseum continued their thematic trilogy with Chapter 2: Numquam (2009), which expanded their sonic palette by incorporating session musicians on violin, cello, trumpet, and flute, creating a more dynamic and symphonic approach to their funereal sound. However, the band’s trajectory was tragically cut short. Shortly after recording their third album, Chapter 3: Parasomnia (2010), without prior rehearsal and over the course of just two weeks, frontman Juhani Palomäki was found dead on May 15, 2010, at the age of thirty-two. The surviving members decided to disband Colosseum but ensured that Palomäki’s final work would be released posthumously. Chapter 3: Parasomnia arrived in March 2011, charting in Finland and serving as a poignant and powerful testament to Palomäki’s artistic vision. Though their active career was brief, Colosseum left an indelible mark on the funeral doom genre, remembered for their emotionally devastating and meticulously crafted body of work.
