About This Band
Electric Wizard is an English doom metal/stoner metal band formed in 1993 in Dorset, widely regarded as one of the most influential acts in the genre. Founded by guitarist/vocalist Jus Oborn and bassist Tim Bagshaw, the band pioneered a sludgy, bass-heavy sound infused with occult themes, psychedelic haze, and a nihilistic obsession with horror films (especially Lucio Fulci’s Zombie and Ken Russell’s Altered States). Their breakthrough album, Dopethrone (2000), became a cult classic—a monolithic, feedback-drenched masterpiece that defined “weedian” doom with its down-tuned riffs, fuzzed-out bass, and Oborn’s distorted vocals.
Despite lineup changes (including the departure of Bagshaw and drummer Mark Greening), Oborn kept the Wizard’s flame alive with albums like We Live (2004) and Time to Die (2014), deepening their Lovecraftian horror aesthetic and anti-establishment venom. Their sound—slow, oppressive, and hypnotic—has inspired countless doom bands like Sleep, Windhand, and Monolord. Electric Wizard remains a countercultural icon, embodying metal’s darkest, most weed-soaked fantasies.
