About This Band
Sunn O)) is an American drone/doom metal band formed in 1998 in Seattle, Washington, by founders Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson. The band is renowned for its monumental, minimalist sound built on extremely slow, heavily distorted guitar tones, immense low-end frequencies, and ritualistic live performances. Drawing inspiration from Earth, the Melvins, and black metal aesthetics, Sunn O)))’s music is less about traditional song structure and more about experiencing sound as a physical force. Their name is taken from the brand Sunn Amplifiers, whose amplifiers are famous for their loud, powerful output—a fitting tribute to the band’s earth-shaking volume.
Early albums like ØØ Void (2000) and Flight of the Behemoth (2002) established their signature drone approach, but it was Black One (2005)—featuring vocal contributions from black metal vocalist Xasthur and Malefic (Krieg)—that brought them wider recognition. The band is also known for high-concept collaborations, such as Monoliths & Dimensions (2009), which incorporated orchestral, choir, and jazz elements, and Life Metal (2019) / Pyroclasts (2019), produced by legendary sound engineer Steve Albini. On stage, the band performs robed in fog and intense lighting, creating an immersive, almost ceremonial experience.
