About This Band
Amberian Dawn is a Finnish symphonic power metal band founded in two thousand six by guitarist and keyboardist Tuomas Seppälä and bassist Tommi Kuri, both formerly of the band Virtuocity. After initially operating as Atheme One with male vocalist Peter James Goodman, the duo decided to seek a classically trained female singer, leading them to soprano Heidi Parviainen, who became the band’s defining voice and lyricist. The band’s name was changed to Amberian Dawn, and their sound quickly crystallized as a blend of powerful, fast-paced metal with evocative classical vocals, drawing comparisons to Epica and Nightwish. Their debut album River of Tuoni was released in two thousand eight, charting in Finland and leading to extensive touring across Europe, often as support for Epica.
The band’s history is marked by a significant creative evolution and a pivotal lineup change in late two thousand twelve, when Parviainen, along with drummer Heikki Saari and guitarist Kasperi Heikkinen, departed the group. They were replaced by returning members Joonas Pykälä-Aho and Emil Pohjalainen, and most importantly, by new vocalist Päivi “Capri” Virkkunen, a professionally trained singer with a background in pop music. This new era was launched with the compilation Re-Evolution in two thousand thirteen, featuring re-recorded classics with Capri’s voice. Signing with Napalm Records, the band released Magic Forest in two thousand fourteen, the first of several albums showcasing a more keyboard-driven sound and Capri’s powerful rock vocals. They have continued to release music steadily, including the charting albums Darkness of Eternity (two thousand seventeen) and Looking for You (two thousand twenty), and notably ventured into “ABBA-metal” with their two thousand twenty-two tribute album Take a Chance – A Metal Tribute to ABBA.
