About
Finntroll is a black metal folk group from Finland. Their style is quite peculiar, as they combine elements of black metal with the Finnish polka style known as humppa. Although the band’s roots are Finnish, the lyrics are in Swedish, as this “sounds a lot like troll” according to Katla, the band’s first singer, who has this language as her mother tongue.
Finntroll was formed in 1997 by Teemu Raimoranta, guitarist of Impaled Nazarene, and Jan ‘Katla’ Jämsen. Their first demo, Rivfader, was recorded after one year, in 1998, and after the recording the rest of the initial members joined the band: Samu Ruotsalainen (from Barathrum and Rapture), Samuli Ponsimaa, Henri Sorvali (from Moonsorrow) and Sami Uusitalo. The Spinefarm label became interested in the group and they signed a contract, after which they recorded Midnattens Widunder (which could be translated as The Midnight Beast) in 1999.
