About This Band
ris is a seminal Canadian black metal band from Quebec, formed in 2005 as a duo of multi-instrumentalists Icare (guitars, bass, drums, vocals) and Sivregh (keyboards, samples). Emerging from the deeply influential Quebecois black metal scene, the band quickly distinguished itself with a profoundly depressive, atmospheric, and neoclassical sound. Their debut album, Il était une forêt… (2007), released on the cult label Sepulchral Productions, is considered a landmark of the “blackgaze” and depressive black metal (DSBM) subgenres. The album’s raw, agonized shrieks, melancholic piano passages, and dense, tremolo-picked walls of sound created a harrowing yet beautiful auditory experience, establishing Gris as a vehicle for exploring profound themes of sorrow, misanthropy, and nature’s bleak beauty.
After the debut, Sivregh departed, and Icare transformed Gris into a collaborative studio project with other musicians from the Quebec scene, including members of Sombres Forêts and Neige et Noirceur. The follow-up, the monumental double-album À l’âme enflammée, l’âme constellée… (2013), marked a significant evolution. It featured a more expansive, orchestral, and dynamically complex approach—incorporating acoustic guitars, violin, cello, and clean vocal passages—while retaining its core depressive intensity. This album solidified their reputation for crafting emotionally devastating and artistically ambitious suites. Despite a notoriously elusive public presence and sporadic activity, Gris’s meticulous, deeply emotional, and atmospheric work has garnered a dedicated international following, securing their status as one of the most revered and unique acts in atmospheric black metal.
