About This Band
Hevisaurus is a Finnish heavy metal band founded in two thousand nine with a unique mission: creating metal music specifically for children. The band was conceived by drummer Mirka Rantanen of Thunderstone, who recognized an opportunity to introduce young audiences to the energy of metal after attending a children’s concert with his own kids. The band members perform in elaborate dinosaur and dragon costumes, each with distinct character names: Herra Hevisaurus on vocals, Milli Pilli on keyboards, Komppi Momppi on drums, Riffi Raffi on guitar, and Muffi Puffi on bass. Their music blends power metal and hard rock with child-friendly, often educational lyrics covering topics from homework to the benefits of drinking milk.
Since their debut in two thousand nine, Hevisaurus has become a commercial phenomenon in Finland, with albums selling over one hundred seventy thousand copies. Their album Hirmuliskojen yö became the second best-selling album in Finland in two thousand ten, earning them the Emma Award for best children’s album. The band’s popularity spawned a movie, an amusement park attraction, and international versions including the German Heavysaurus and Spanish Heavysaurios. In two thousand eleven, founder Rantanen left after a legal dispute with Sony Music over character rights, forming the competing band Sauruxet, but Hevisaurus has continued performing and releasing new music.
