About This Band
Leaves’ Eyes is a German-Norwegian symphonic metal band founded in 2003 by vocalist Liv Kristine (formerly of Theatre of Tragedy) and the members of the German melodic death/ Viking metal band Atrocity, most notably her then-husband, guitarist Alexander Krull. Conceived as a project to blend Liv’s ethereal, “beauty-style” vocals with heavier, folk- and Viking-influenced metal, the band created a distinct sound characterized by its epic narratives, cinematic keyboards, and a contrast between angelic female melodies and Krull’s guttural growls. Their debut album, Lovelorn (2004), established this signature style, drawing immediate attention within the gothic and symphonic metal communities for its romantic, ocean-themed storytelling and seamless fusion of melodic accessibility with metallic aggression.
The band solidified its reputation with a series of ambitious concept albums centered on Norse history and mythology, beginning with the acclaimed Vinland Saga (2005) and continuing through Njord (2009) and Meredead (2011). These releases featured increased use of folk instruments, choirs, and multiple languages (including Old Norse), expanding their scope into full-blown cinematic, historical metal. Following Liv Kristine’s departure in 2016, Finnish singer Elina Siirala (ex-Ensiferum live vocalist) took over lead vocal duties. With Siirala, Leaves’ Eyes has continued its thematic path, releasing albums like Sign of the Dragonhead (2018) and The Last Viking (2020), which further explore legendary sagas with a powerful, polished production. Despite the significant lineup change, the band remains a prolific and prominent pillar of the European symphonic and folk metal scene.
