About The Band
Overkill is an American thrash metal band formed in 1980 in New Jersey. Founded by bassist D.D. Verni and drummer Rat Skates from the punk band The Lubricunts, the group soon added vocalist Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth and guitarist Robert Pisarek. After settling on the name “Overkill” (inspired by Motörhead’s album), the band developed a distinctive sound blending punk rock aggression with the new wave of British heavy metal, earning them the nickname “the Motörhead of thrash metal.” Over the years, Overkill has undergone numerous lineup changes, with Verni and Ellsworth remaining the only original members. Their current lineup includes Verni, Ellsworth, Dave Linsk (lead guitar), Derek “The Skull” Tailer (rhythm guitar), and Jeramie Kling (touring drummer).
The band gained prominence in the mid-to-late 1980s thrash metal scene, signing with Atlantic Records in 1986 and releasing influential albums like Taking Over (1987), The Years of Decay (1989), and Horrorscope (1991). Known for their relentless energy and a mascot named “Chaly” (a skeletal bat with a skull face), Overkill has released 20 studio albums, including their latest, Scorched (2023). With over 16 million records sold worldwide, they remain a cornerstone of East Coast thrash metal, maintaining a loyal fanbase through consistent touring and a commitment to their roots.
