About This Band
Symphony X is an American progressive metal band from New Jersey, founded by guitarist Michael Romeo. Romeo’s self-produced demo tape The Dark Chapter attracted significant attention, particularly in Japan, eventually leading to the birth of Symphony X. The initial lineup consisted of Romeo alongside bassist Thomas Miller, vocalist Rod Tyler, drummer Jason Rullo, and keyboardist Michael Pinnella, and they released their self-titled debut album not long after forming. Although the album made a strong impression on the progressive metal scene, the band parted ways with vocalist Rod Tyler shortly thereafter and recruited Russell Allen, whose powerful and classically-influenced vocal style would become a defining element of the band’s sound.
With the new lineup, Symphony X rose to prominence within the progressive metal community. Their first album to achieve this milestone was The Divine Wings of Tragedy, which showcased the band’s technical prowess and is widely considered a masterpiece of the genre. They continued to build their legacy with subsequent releases such as Twilight in Olympus, V: The New Mythology Suite, and the epic twenty-four minute title track of The Odyssey. After several lineup changes, including the eventual departures of bassist Thomas Miller and drummer Jason Rullo, the band stabilized with the arrival of bassist Michael LePond and the return of drummer Jason Rullo. This solidified lineup has since achieved further critical and commercial success with albums like Paradise Lost and Iconoclast, continuing to push the boundaries of power, speed, and technique in progressive metal.
