About This Band
ýr is a Faroese folk metal band formed in Copenhagen, Denmark, in January 1998. The project began when vocalist and guitarist Heri Joensen met his former bandmate, Kári Streymoy, at a party and proposed they start a new group. They were soon joined by bassist Gunnar H. Thomsen, another former bandmate, expanding the duo into a trio. The band’s name derives from Týr, the Norse god of war and justice. Their early subject matter revolved almost entirely around Viking lore, mythology, and history. In 2001, guitarist Terji Skibenæs joined the band, and that same year, Týr achieved their Faroese breakthrough by participating in the bi-annual ‘Prix Føroyar’ contest. Their performance of “Ormurin Langi” at the contest became a major hit in the Faroe Islands.
In early 2006, Týr signed a worldwide deal with Austria’s Napalm Records, while remaining signed to the Faroese label Tutl. In September 2012, they signed with Metal Blade Records. The band’s meticulous brand of progressive folk-metal blends traditional Faroese and Nordic folk melodies with heavy, progressive structures. Their sound has been described as having more in common with progressive rock bands like Rush and Opeth than with typical Viking metal acts. Joensen’s clear vocal delivery and icy guitar tone, alongside Skibenæs’s guitar work, have become hallmarks of their sound. Týr has released numerous albums over the years, including How Far to Asgaard (2002), Eric the Red (2003), Ragnarok (2006), Land (2008), By the Light of the Northern Star (2009), The Lay of Thrym (2011), and Valkyrja (2013).
